Wonderful Winter Wrapup Guide

Following up our Winter Wishlist – especially seeing as how we are now firmly ensconced in winter’s tight embrace – it made perfect sense to provide everyone out there with a short guide as to what’s trending in the fashion world of warmth!

Trench warfare

Trench coats are a perfect way to send out signals that indicate you’re keen to keep the warmth close but still exude a certain charm. Just because it’s essentially a giant, oversized coat never means you have to look like something that crawled out of the Ottoman Empire.
With prime choices like the Marc by Marc Jacobs Penn Trench Coat with a removable faux fur collar (for that extra dash of both style and warmth) or the Tory Burch Beckett Coat – double-breasted and also including a detachable, notched faux fur collar – there is certainly no shortage of heart and self-warming options to choose from this winter.

Dating back to around the time of the First World War, trench coats were primarily made for army use. However, times sure have changed and now the trench coat is accessible to all! Gone are the plain and mundane colours and styles of old and we revel in a new era of trench coat-related style. Bold cuts and colour choices sit perfectly next to more traditional styles and the subdued hues of yesteryear brought forwards for our delight.

Hug a Hoodie

Next stop for wrapping up this winter is the sometimes chronically undervalued hoodie. Taking a leaf from the humble windbreaker’s book, the hoodie is ostensibly designed with keeping the elements out and the heat in. Originally marketed to New York laborers working upstate, the hoodie would protect them from the often freezing temperatures their jobs required them to work in. New York aside and like the trench coat, whilst the hoodie may have its origins in slightly harsher climes, it is nevertheless an indispensable fashion statement. With items such as the 291 Dream On Fleece Hoodie – sporting a fetching graphic and logo lettering, this would do the perfect job of keeping the wind at bay, be it at the beach or out for a casual walk down the street.

Even the poncho – a distant cousin of the hoodie – an item with its roots with the Native Americans of the Andes, has been brought out of the shadows of an intense labor orientated past and elevated in the eyes of sharp fashion pioneers. Take a look at our Dolan Hooded Poncho and you’ll see what we mean. A knit poncho akin to the ponchos of yore, this hooded poncho will do just as good a job at keeping you warm whilst still allowing you to look your best. Dazzling and warm, ponchos certainly do make a person happy!

Card trick

Last stop on our short-lived tour of what keeps you wrapped up and cosy: the stalwart cardigan! Yet again, the cardigan is another item that shares ties with the military. In this instance, drawing its name from the 7^th Earl of Cardigan , James Brudenell. A military commander, his style was later adopted by those working outside in harsh climes as something to ward of the environment and keep heat close. As the proverbial snowball continued to roll, the cardigan was adopted by more and more people from all walks of life, eventually ending up as a sensible number to wear both inside and outside in which to keep as snug as anything.

As you can see by our aptly named Winter Kate Flying Fox Bed Cardigan, the cardigan might have come a long way in terms of its history, but certainly has yet to stray from its mainstay as a firm provider of comfort and style. With this particular item featuring a velvet trim – definitely a far cry from the garments that used to adorn fishermen – you can say that the cardigan has undergone many forms of evolution to arrive at what it is today, but then again, that is what fashion is all about: keeping it fresh and new!

Winter Wishlist: Fluxus Nomad Scarf, The Classics Never Die

The basics are still the best. Everyone needs a few camisoles for all season layering, yoga or sweat pants are great for sleeping in, working out or relaxing, and the Fluxus Nomad Scarf is good for everything else. Wear it as a hood, wear it long, wrap it again and again, wear it as a shawl, snap your boyfriend in the butt with it (am I the only one who still snaps towels?), it’s perfect.

It comes in as many varieties as you might need, for men and women, and has become a staple in my household. If you’re interested in what celebrities wear in their off time, a reminder that they’re human and possibly have good taste or at least paid stylists with some taste, don’t forget that the Nomad Scarf is a favorite of Jude Law, Heidi Klum, Josh Hartnett, Oprah and my favorite, Johnny Depp!

It’s hard to express why this scarf has been such a big deal this year. It’s not all thanks to Oprah, but that is a big part of it. Infinity Scarves are the Season’s Savior!

This winter, I’m freezing and it’s not even the coldest month yet. We’re staying in the Rocky Mountains through April and I don’t think I knew what I was in for because I have had to majorly stock up on sweaters, boots, and of course the most important part, accessories.

Most people only own one winter coat and maybe a couple winter boots so accessorizing in the winter is extra important. Otherwise, you look exactly the same every time you go outside.

Scarves are probably my favorite accessory for all seasons but especially winter, and this year, the Infinity Scarf is dominating my coat rack. I think it was this look by Jessica Alba that really pulled me in and the fact that you can use the scarves as hoods and still keep your neck warm.

And for a girl who has some really hot but really impractical winter coats without hoods, the loop scarf is a total lifesaver. I can prop it up over my head when caught in rain or snow and unlike a regular scarf, it’ll stay put. It’s so cozy and ridiculously easy to wear that I smile just thinking about it.

These are the ones I own and wear constantly! While I sit here typing, looking outside at the snow, I’m nice and warm.

In a cozy Nordic style, this scarf will probably be my favorite for a couple years. It’s made from warm, soft mohair, nylon and acrylic yarns and is 3 feet long (thats 6 feet long really, but looped!). It’s a little more than I want to spend so Its on my wishlist!

Be Different with Unique Vintage

Being different can be hard, especially if you don’t like people staring at you. If you don’t mind, like me, you wear what you want that is flattering, or at least makes a statement.

Vintage Clothing is the way to go if you want to look different without spending a ton on designer fly by night styles.

Vintage is timeless and has lasted the test of time, making its debut daily on backs of celebrities and home makers alike. Vintage is in a constant revival, cycling through the eras without fail unlike some current trends which can be about 70% experimental or not made to last at all (like one sleeve dresses).
There is a misconception that you have to go to a stinky old thrift store or vintage shop to get the looks, and some vintage shops do hike up prices due to the pristine condition of a 50 year old dress – BUT – Vintage does not have to be used or old! There are tons of places to get remakes of old styles, made in modern fabrics (those of you who have worn polyester know what I mean) and at a really affordable price.

I wanted to share with you some of my favorite vintage trends of this year and 2012! Dresses are of course the highlight, it seems that no one can get enough of them, but don’t forget those cardigans you thought you hated as a kid, which are now the coolest thing on ebay, etsy and vintage collectors alike.

Spirit Hoods: Power of the Wolf!

Ok, so maybe the years hottest hooded accessory won’t give you the power of the wolf, but it will put you one step closer to nature and the likes of some of the trendiest famous people out there. The Torn by Ronny Kobo Bianca Tiger Tee is by far my favorite shirt this month. It’s comfortable and has just enough coverage for spring weather and its now $49.50 (50% off), comes in both Nude and Ivory.

This top features Kimono Sleeves, a scoop neck and burnout jersey-tee fabric. It flows when you walk but not like a dress shirt, its soft to the touch and loose fitting like an over-sized tee without looking uber casual.
