Pin-up style is always fun and flirty and although technically retro, it’s a style that has transcended all decades since it’s popularity in the 50s and 60s. Names like Betty Page, Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable still flicker on the tongues of anyone who appreciates the style of the clothing, the classic beauty of the ladies or the art itself.
Bernie Dexter is one designer brand making accurate and affordable Rockabilly and pin-up girl style dresses. A name and style that celebrities like Brooke Bundy take notice of. Brooke showed up for the premier of The Hunger Games glowing and fitting perfectly into her gorgeous Bernie Dexter – Ruby Dark Tea Room Wiggle Dress.

All the Rockabilly Girl dresses by Bernie Dexter will fit into just about anyone’s closet and would be just amazing for a Date Night!

The pattern is a vintage flower style, that comes in a halter ballroom style we well, great for spring!

Accessorizing these dresses is a cinch! They don’t require much accompaniment to be awesome. Some colorful shoes and a simple hair accessory and you’re set. The Rockabilly and Pin-up style is based on simplicity and design, cleverly flattering to the female form. Also, these style of dresses are flattering on all sizes of women, the more shapely the better and most dresses are available up to size 2xl!

Pick up that picnic basket, go to the fair, go shopping downtown – these dresses beg to be seen and Brooke Bundy is confirmation that everyone wants to see them!

Probably not, but Ripley’s “Trashy Fashion Show” on Saturday, March 24, produced three winners and three new exhibits that will go on display at Ripley’s museum in St Augustine, Florida. Teen and “tween” designers swept the competition, winning all three categories.

Masha Sardari in a paint brush paper bag dress.

Kennedy Trugter in her newspaper dress.

Analise Barnard and co-designer Amani Grant won first prize in the twelve and under division for their dress entitled “High Energy.” The party dress and headband were created entirely from coffee filters. The over-the-shoulder mini dress model entered the catwalk partially concealing the gown with a cape made of trash bags. The cape was shed and the amazing dress revealed. The two won $100 for their efforts and Ripley’s paid them another $100 to acquire the dress.

Kennedy Trugter, age 15, won the student prize of $100 for her party dress made entirely out of newspaper. The sleeveless top was adorned with newspaper flowers and ruffles, while the skirt was triple-tiered with hundreds of pleated paper sections. Ripley’s also acquired this dress for an additional $100.

Analise Barnard in a dress made from coffee filters.

The 17 and up category was won by Masha Sardari, who had two entries. The first was a formal, knee length gown made from used paint brushes and paper bags. Her second entry was a cocktail dress made from a used shower curtain. Ultimately, it was her first gown that took the prize. She too won $100 and Ripley’s acquired the dress for display for another $100.

Other entries included dresses made from magazines, bottle caps, grocery bags, paper cups, snack wrappers, trading cards and magazines.

In the art competition, Evan Rachelle won the youth division for his artwork entitled “A Bucket of Crayola” which was created from old, melted crayons on canvas. The sculpture “Full of It” won best overall and was the creation of Stephanie Seivert and Abby Solaun, both 16. “Full of It” was a life sized sculpture of a man created from packing tape, magazines and cardboard.

Slouch booties are amazing for pretty much any time of year but Spring is probably my favorite time to wear them. The weather is cool, I’m still wearing pants and leggings and slouch boots are the perfect height for both. They work over or under most pants and leggings and come in all kinds of heel heights, adding texture and style to your lower half.

Many people think that slouch boots are from the 80s but actually they’ve been around since the renaissance ages. This means that not only are they cool and diverse now, but they have been for hundreds of years and will continue to be, no matter where you live in the world. Historically the boots were for both men or women but in the 20th-21st centuries, women have almost completely dominated the boot market, leaving men with combat or cowboy boots, unless the gent is a classy type and likes the slick soled Italian boots.

Celebrities are well aware of the timelessness of a good pair of Slouch booties and you’ll see almost any one of them wearing a pair at some point during the year.

My new favorite pair was seen on Katherine Heigl, actress from Grey’s Anatomy and the movie Knocked Up, is the Chinese Laundry Wiz boots, in brown or grey . A fun, down to earth and relatable actress, she’s pretty and approachable, and obviously has an everyday girl style of dressing.

I wear my slouch boots out shopping, out to dinner, to a film and at work. They keep my ankles warm in a cold office, theater or outdoors in the spring weather and add that little bit of style needed for any outfit I own.
Do you have a favorite pair? or need more? This spring 2012 is the perfect season to start looking. All natural colors are in style right now and in some places, Neon is really making a comeback. Can’t lose, no matter what!

With this new Fall/Winter 2012-2013 collection, PACO RABANNE puts the spotlight on the original vision of its founder, transposed into today’s world, a world already taken aback by well known and sweet smelling Paco Rabanne fragrances.

Unique vision and techniques. Essential, timeless values, a true brand heritage. The utopias of the ‘60s and ‘70s have cleverly morphed into an urban, dynamic wardrobe with mastered audacities. At the very heart of this stylistic reflections, there is an encounter between two currents, avant-garde and elegance.

With the same innovative spirit that sparked its very beginning, the House feeds off a vision of architecture applied at all levels in the collection: construction, assembly, structure, rhythm of filled and empty spaces, details -visible or invisible – it’s a real architectural language that has been put into place. In osmosis with the spirit of PACO RABANNE, this inspiration is also the meaningful link between past, present and future.

This collection is inspired by the image of singer Françoise Hardy in the early 70’s. A troubling beauty. A femininity with no complexes and far from the usual clichés.

Following up our Winter Wishlist – especially seeing as how we are now firmly ensconced in winter’s tight embrace – it made perfect sense to provide everyone out there with a short guide as to what’s trending in the fashion world of warmth!

Trench warfare

Trench coats are a perfect way to send out signals that indicate you’re keen to keep the warmth close but still exude a certain charm. Just because it’s essentially a giant, oversized coat never means you have to look like something that crawled out of the Ottoman Empire.
With prime choices like the Marc by Marc Jacobs Penn Trench Coat with a removable faux fur collar (for that extra dash of both style and warmth) or the Tory Burch Beckett Coat – double-breasted and also including a detachable, notched faux fur collar – there is certainly no shortage of heart and self-warming options to choose from this winter.

Dating back to around the time of the First World War, trench coats were primarily made for army use. However, times sure have changed and now the trench coat is accessible to all! Gone are the plain and mundane colours and styles of old and we revel in a new era of trench coat-related style. Bold cuts and colour choices sit perfectly next to more traditional styles and the subdued hues of yesteryear brought forwards for our delight.

Hug a Hoodie

Next stop for wrapping up this winter is the sometimes chronically undervalued hoodie. Taking a leaf from the humble windbreaker’s book, the hoodie is ostensibly designed with keeping the elements out and the heat in. Originally marketed to New York laborers working upstate, the hoodie would protect them from the often freezing temperatures their jobs required them to work in. New York aside and like the trench coat, whilst the hoodie may have its origins in slightly harsher climes, it is nevertheless an indispensable fashion statement. With items such as the 291 Dream On Fleece Hoodie – sporting a fetching graphic and logo lettering, this would do the perfect job of keeping the wind at bay, be it at the beach or out for a casual walk down the street.

Even the poncho – a distant cousin of the hoodie – an item with its roots with the Native Americans of the Andes, has been brought out of the shadows of an intense labor orientated past and elevated in the eyes of sharp fashion pioneers. Take a look at our Dolan Hooded Poncho and you’ll see what we mean. A knit poncho akin to the ponchos of yore, this hooded poncho will do just as good a job at keeping you warm whilst still allowing you to look your best. Dazzling and warm, ponchos certainly do make a person happy!

Card trick

Last stop on our short-lived tour of what keeps you wrapped up and cosy: the stalwart cardigan! Yet again, the cardigan is another item that shares ties with the military. In this instance, drawing its name from the 7th Earl of Cardigan , James Brudenell. A military commander, his style was later adopted by those working outside in harsh climes as something to ward of the environment and keep heat close. As the proverbial snowball continued to roll, the cardigan was adopted by more and more people from all walks of life, eventually ending up as a sensible number to wear both inside and outside in which to keep as snug as anything.

As you can see by our aptly named Winter Kate Flying Fox Bed Cardigan, the cardigan might have come a long way in terms of its history, but certainly has yet to stray from its mainstay as a firm provider of comfort and style. With this particular item featuring a velvet trim – definitely a far cry from the garments that used to adorn fishermen – you can say that the cardigan has undergone many forms of evolution to arrive at what it is today, but then again, that is what fashion is all about: keeping it fresh and new!

That now brings this short – and hopefully informative – guide to warmth to a close. We hope you can now go forth with a renewed vigor as to what to stock your winter wardrobe with so that it not only keeps you warm, but looks awesome as well. Happy hunting!

The basics are still the best. Everyone needs a few camisoles for all season layering, yoga or sweat pants are great for sleeping in, working out or relaxing, and the Fluxus Nomad Scarf is good for everything else. Wear it as a hood, wear it long, wrap it again and again, wear it as a shawl, snap your boyfriend in the butt with it (am I the only one who still snaps towels?), it’s perfect.

It comes in as many varieties as you might need, for men and women, and has become a staple in my household. If you’re interested in what celebrities wear in their off time, a reminder that they’re human and possibly have good taste or at least paid stylists with some taste, don’t forget that the Nomad Scarf is a favorite of Jude Law, Heidi Klum, Josh Hartnett, Oprah and my favorite, Johnny Depp!

I still have my black one from last year, still in great shape, lasting many washes and envied by all, and I recently started getting a collection Infinity Scarves, but really, I love my nomad so much, It’s back on my wishlist this year in slate!

It’s hard to express why this scarf has been such a big deal this year. It’s not all thanks to Oprah, but that is a big part of it. The fabric of the Nomad scarf is super soft, not wispy like silk or anything but somehow as soft as – yet cuts out breezes and chills at the same time. It’s huge, about 4 feet by 6 feet – so you can drape it over your shoulders to cut out the AC on a long plane ride, then line it back up and put it around your neck for a great look while traveling, even if just to the store.

This winter, I’m freezing and it’s not even the coldest month yet. We’re staying in the Rocky Mountains through April and I don’t think I knew what I was in for because I have had to majorly stock up on sweaters, boots, and of course the most important part, accessories.

Most people only own one winter coat and maybe a couple winter boots so accessorizing in the winter is extra important. Otherwise, you look exactly the same every time you go outside.

Scarves are probably my favorite accessory for all seasons but especially winter, and this year, the Infinity Scarf is dominating my coat rack. I think it was this look by Jessica Alba that really pulled me in and the fact that you can use the scarves as hoods and still keep your neck warm.

And for a girl who has some really hot but really impractical winter coats without hoods, the loop scarf is a total lifesaver. I can prop it up over my head when caught in rain or snow and unlike a regular scarf, it’ll stay put. It’s so cozy and ridiculously easy to wear that I smile just thinking about it.

These are the ones I own and wear constantly! While I sit here typing, looking outside at the snow, I’m nice and warm.
